🎄Boxing Day🎄Level 2 ❄ 7 mile walk from Ashbourne to Upper/Middle Mayfield 🎄
December 26 @ 11:15 am - 4:00 pm
Let’s burn a few calories from your 🎄Christmas Day🎄 pigout🐷 and get some fresh country air!!
Join me on this 7 mile historic route, it’s a walk not too miss! It takes us through riverside meadows and along ancient tracks, over brooks and bridges, and past farms dating back as far as 1440. Through the interesting Villages of Middle and Upper Mayfield where we see a wealth of 17th Century and even older properties. We’ll have an abundance of photographic opportunities!
Over Hanging Bridge which takes us into Staffordshire. The retreating army of Bonnie Prince Charlie rode through here in 1745. In Upper and Middle Mayfield, we pass Old Hall Farm which dates back to 1680 with a beautiful Jacobean House. Holme farm which dates in part to 1440 and Brook Farm 1580. Historic Halls and Cottages, St John the Baptist Church, Saxon in origin, Mayfield Mill complex, the former Clifton Railway Station and many more discoveries on the way.
This is an undulating walk with some muddy paths through fields, but equally, good paths through Villages.
It’s suitable for anyone used to walking distances of 5 – 10 miles with slightly hilly terrain and uneven paths.
Due to the expected winter weather, warm layers hat and gloves are a must. As well as good walking boots for those muddy and wet unavoidable areas.. But it’s all part of the fun and adventure of walking in winter!
Bring some leftover turkey and stuffing sandwiches for a sheltered picnic stop.. Mince pies to give us some energy, and maybe a drop of brandy to chase away the cold wind..
Toilets near the start of the walk at Mappleton Lane Carpark and at the pub stop. We’ll be having the pub stop halfway at the Rose & Crown in Middle Mayfield.
Dogs are welcome on the walk..🐾🐾🐾😊

It’ll give us more daylight to enjoy looking round the villages and the pub, of course! (That’s the main reason.. After all, it is Boxing Day!)
